"Rocky, we love you dog-dog"

Grief \ noun \ Deep and poignant distress caused by or as if by bereavement; a cause of suffering.
It is so very hard to prepare ourselves for the hole that will fill our hearts when we lose our beloved animal companions. Unfortunately, we must all pass through this grief stage before we can come to terms with this life altering experience.
Once we made the decision that we must let Rocky go, the pain was almost unbearable. How was I going to live through this? I knew that we were relieving him from his arthritis pain, the daily insulin shots to control his diabetes, and his beginnings of doggy senility. But still, I didn't want to let him go.
What would life be like without my good buddy? My faithful studio friend? How could I explain to him that the time had come to make the selfless decision to release him from his discomfort? When the mobile vet showed up, he knew. Though he had never met the Doctor before, he was calm and relaxed as he blindly (literally, a result of the diabetes) smelled her hand and the travel bag of syringes and medicines.
He laid by me quietly while she explained the process of euthanasia. There was no turning back, I knew that the time had come to let him go.
He had let me know a week earlier (though I didn't see it at the time), when he laid his head in my lap one evening. I said to him "Rocky, I don't know what you want". Now I know he was telling me he was tired and ready to leave us. There is comfort now in knowing that he was ready.
It has been almost 4 years since Rocky left us. The deep sadness lifted long ago, and now my family and I can laugh and share fond memories of Rocky.
He was a wonderful dog, and we cherish the time he was able to be a part of our lives. Our initial grief has turned to lasting memories of a super companion.
We hope that the pages listed to the left may help you work through any grief and sorrow you may be experiencing after the loss of your companion.
Please feel free to share your feelings with others on our Pet Loss Forum.
We would also like to invite you to submit a photo and text memory/memorial in honor of your beloved companion.
Sincerely,

Valerie Logan
